Ethics Working for You

Dr. Louise Gaston

Do you care about your patients and work?  Are you competent and seeking further competence?  Along with efficacy, is your main concern to do no harm?  Do you consult regularly?  Are you HIPAA and ethically compliant?

This course aims at assisting practitioners to conduct psychotherapy, in terms of frame and process, in accordance to ethical guidelines and standards, especially with respect to areas where ethical and/or legal violations are most reported, that is, confidentiality, informed consent to treatment, and competence.  The HIPAA guidelines will also be reviewed.

bulletSpecifically regarding ethics, Dr. Gaston was an elected member of a licensing board in 1993-1994, and has served on the research ethics committee at the Department of Psychiatry at McGill University in 1992.  Since 1991, Dr. Gaston has been teaching ethics to practitioners in training at her specialized clinic.  None of the over 3,000 patients has filed a complaint at the licensing board against any of those practitioners, including herself, while most presented with trauma and personality disorders.  Dr. Gaston approaches ethics issues with an interesting and positive attitude, believing that an intricate knowledge of ethics codes helps structure treatment and treatment setting in a way which is conducive to enhance benefits to patients and practitioners.
