Trauma and Personality Disorders
Dr. Louise Gaston
Are some of your patients presenting with PTSD
and a personality disorder? Are you puzzled at times as to how to help them?
This course will teach you about the clinical complexities involved in treating
individuals with PTSD and a personality disorder. To be effective and ethical,
psychotherapists need to know when to address issues related to the personality disorder
versus the traumatic material.
 | Course Objectives
 | Learn about the similarities between PTSD and personality disorders, using Masterson's
and Bowlby's models |
 | Learn how trauma and personality disorders interact |
 | Learn why trauma-focused techniques should be avoided, or adapted |
 | Learn how to adapt psychotherapy in terms of its relational and technical ingredients |
 | Learn the goals to be attained, and the differential processes at play with schizoids,
narcissists and borderlines |
|
 | Clinical Considerations
 | Let's imagine that a 21 year old male is physically assaulted. Recovered
physically, he maintains severe PTSD symptomatology, a Panic Disorder with Agoraphobia,
and a Conversion Disorder as pseudo-epileptic seizures. He is forced to let go of his
dream of becoming a professional football player. But he keeps on studying in college.
Later, he is victimized during a sadistic hold-up. All of his symptoms worsen, and a Major
Depression Disorder is added. When he consults in therapy, he sleeps 2 to 5 hours per
night, has terrifying nightmares, experiences many flashbacks per hour, but he pursues
college and keeps on playing football. He refuses adamantly to take medication. Techniques
such as relaxation, hypnosis, EMDR, etc., cannot induce any improvement. What can be done
in psychotherapy to help this young man? |
 | To answer this question, you need to know about trauma and personality disorder models,
and how to integrate them. In this course, the process and outcome of the psychotherapy of
many complicated cases will be presented. An integrative model for treating trauma in
personality disorders will be outlined. |
